The only way Japan sees a dollar from western fans is if you buy imported anime (or watch streaming, like on Crunchyroll). They pretty much get to bid whatever they want.

Why is that bad news you might ask? Because they have little to no competition bidding for IPs. It's a bit of a shame really, funimation is the only big company in the western market which survived (barely, their parent company tried to sell them off) the big anime recession of the late 2000s. If Funimation only sold 1 copy, or they sold 15 million copies, the creators see no more or less than what Funimation already paid them for the rights.

There are no royalties or residuals paid to the Japanese companies. Funimation pays a single set license fee to the creators for the rights to distribute and modify the IP.

Major financial success almost promises a revitalization of the franchise, however small that may be.
